How long does furniture take to reach Dubai? Lead times from Turkey, China and Europe
Real lead times from DOMA projects: production, freight and customs for each origin, and how to plan an opening around them.

Typical lead times to Dubai on DOMA projects:
- Custom furniture made to drawings: about 40 days of production plus about 10 days of delivery.
- Furniture made in China: 50–60 days of production plus about 30 days of shipping.
- Lighting from Europe: production confirmed by the factory, then up to 5 days by air.
- SNOC outdoor furniture in stock: about 2 weeks from Istanbul by road, including customs.
- Bespoke rugs: about 20 days of production, then 3–5 days by air or about 10 days by road.
Add time for drawings and sample approvals before production starts.
A lead time is more than production
When a factory quotes "six weeks", it usually means six weeks of production. The date that matters to you is when the item is installed. Between the two there are five stages, and each one can add days:
- Approvals. Shop drawings, finishes and fabrics signed off. Production does not start without them.
- Production. From the moment the factory has approved drawings, materials and the deposit.
- Quality control and packing. Checking finished pieces against the approved samples, then export packing.
- Freight. Road, sea or air, depending on the origin, the volume and the deadline.
- Customs and delivery. Clearance in the UAE, then delivery to site and installation.
Typical lead times by product and origin
| Product | Production | Transport to Dubai | Typical total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom furniture made to drawings | About 40 days | About 10 days | About 7–8 weeks |
| Furniture made in China | 50–60 days | About 30 days by sea | About 3 months |
| Lighting from Europe | Confirmed per factory | Up to 5 days by air | Depends on the range |
| SNOC outdoor furniture, in stock | Ready | About 10 days by road plus customs | About 2 weeks |
| Bespoke rugs | About 20 days | 3–5 days by air or about 10 days by road | About 1 month |
These are working figures from DOMA projects, not promises for every factory. Exact dates are confirmed for each item in the quotation and tracked until delivery.
Turkey: by road, close enough to plan tightly
Turkey is one of the closest large furniture-making countries to the UAE, with factories that produce to drawings at project scale. Goods travel by truck: from Istanbul, about 10 days on the road plus a few days for customs. That makes Turkey a strong choice for custom upholstery, casegoods, outdoor furniture and bespoke rugs when the deadline is tight.
- Good for: custom furniture to drawings, hotel and restaurant seating, outdoor furniture, hand-carved rugs.
- Watch out for: quotations priced in Turkish lira usually stay valid for a shorter time because of currency movements. Approve them promptly.
China: the widest range, the longest route
Chinese factories cover almost every category and handle large quantities well, which suits repeat items for hotels, residential towers and offices. Plan for 50–60 days of production and about 30 days of sea freight to Jebel Ali.
- Good for: large quantities of repeat items, contract seating, casegoods, decorative lighting.
- Watch out for: factory shutdowns around Chinese New Year, which stop production for several weeks every winter. Orders for spring openings need to be placed well before the holiday.
Europe: signature pieces, lighting and hardware
European manufacturers in Italy, Spain and across the continent are the usual source for architectural lighting, signature furniture and fine hardware. Production times vary by brand and range and are confirmed by the factory with each order. Lighting is compact and valuable, so it usually flies: up to 5 days from Europe to Dubai.
- Good for: architectural lighting, design-led furniture, cast bronze hardware, specialist finishes.
- Watch out for: the August holidays in Italy and Spain, when many factories close.
Customs and import costs in the UAE
Furniture imported into the UAE is generally subject to a 5% customs duty on the CIF value (the cost of the goods plus insurance and freight) and 5% import VAT. Clearance takes a few working days when the paperwork is complete: commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and the bill of lading or road consignment note. Missing or inconsistent documents are the usual cause of delays at the border.
When you buy through a UAE supplier, the supplier imports, pays duty and clears the goods, and you receive an invoice with VAT and a delivery to site.
Is air freight worth it?
For furniture, rarely. Furniture is bulky, and air freight is charged by volume as well as weight, so it costs many times more than road or sea. It can easily cancel the saving of buying directly from the factory. Air freight makes sense for:
- Lighting, which is compact and often needed at a precise stage of the fit-out.
- Bespoke rugs, when the opening date is close (3–5 days instead of about 10 by road).
- Samples, spare parts and a single replacement piece.
Five ways to shorten the timeline without flying furniture
- Order long-lead items first. China-made and custom pieces go first; in-stock items can wait.
- Approve samples in one session. Designer and client together, at a showroom with the actual fabrics, finishes and yarns.
- Choose in-stock models where the design allows. Many contract chairs and outdoor ranges ship from stock.
- Split deliveries by phase. Furnish the areas that open first, then the rest.
- Consolidate shipments. One truck or container per origin is faster to clear than many small parcels.
Clear lead times, tracked to site
Opening on time is what our clients worry about most, and it is what we plan for. DOMA orders directly from manufacturers across Europe, Turkey, China and Azerbaijan, confirms a date for every item in the quotation and follows production, freight, customs and delivery to site.
